We live in symbiosis with our microorganisms. We are only healthy when everything is in balance. The totality of microorganisms, the germs in and on the entire body, weighs approximately 2-3 kg. This is called the microbiota, also microflora or gut flora. A significant portion of these microbes are located not only in the gut, but also in our mouths and on our skin. The term microbiota only became established when conventional medicine discovered, not so long ago, that something like a bacterial flora exists.

Stool tests primarily detect metabolic waste products and the digestive activity of the large intestine's microflora.
